US letter to UN sets out its Iran war case, not a Security Council endorsement
The March filing records Washington's stated rationale and the start date it gave for operations.

Washington's formal account of the Iran war is recorded in a letter dated 10 March, circulated by the UN Security Council as S/2026/161. It says US combat operations began on 28 February in cooperation with Israel.
The letter invokes self-defence under Article 51 and lists protection of US forces, regional partners and maritime commerce among its purposes. These are the US government's stated grounds. Circulation as a Council document does not turn a party's assertions into a UN finding or an authorization of force.
For readers assessing official explanations, the document establishes what Washington put on record and when. Its allegations about Iran require separate scrutiny. It also cannot establish the battlefield situation or the outcome of peace efforts in September: a historical justification and a current operational update answer different questions.
