Disney's 9 to 5 charity pledge covers net U.S. ticket proceeds after costs

The restored film returns to U.S. cinemas for October 9-15. Disney specifies four categories of deductions before the proceeds support Dolly Parton's children's book programme.

A ticket to the restored 9 to 5 will support Dolly Parton's book programme, but the gift is calculated after costs. Disney's September 25 announcement commits net proceeds from U.S. tickets for the October 9-15 theatrical return to the Dollywood Foundation in support of Imagination Library.

Its footnote defines the calculation. Deductions include the share retained by cinemas, third-party distribution fees and expenses, campaign marketing and advertising expenses, and CAF America's administration fees. The pledge therefore does not mean the full amount paid at the box office reaches the foundation.

The one-week return is a 20th Century Studios release, with tickets already on sale across the country. Disney announced the initiative on the first Give Like Dolly Day, September 25, a date that echoes the film's title.

Uncertainty

For U.S. moviegoers, the specified sales window and net-proceeds definition set the scope of the offer. Disney has not stated a final donation total in this announcement.

After Tsuda voice ruling, Japan's actors' union checklist puts AI contracts in focus

Japan's actors' union had already urged performers to check six issues in AI voice contracts, including training, reuse, pay and data storage, before the Tokyo District Court ruled in Kenjiro Tsuda's TikTok case. The court recognized a conditional publicity-rights principle for voices but dismissed the deletion request because the videos were gone; it did not decide that this particular audio infringed his rights.

Beyond Video of the Year, six VMA craft prizes went to five videos

The 2026 MTV VMAs named Taylor Swift’s “The Fate of Ophelia” Video of the Year, but their six professional craft categories told a wider visual story. Direction, art direction, cinematography, editing, choreography and visual effects were spread across five different works. MTV labels these categories non-votable, so their results should not be read as another audience poll or as a sweep by the top-video winner.
