iPhone 18 Pro photo authentication brings a separate sharing privacy choice
Apple's Reference Image documentation separates cloud authentication from sharing: an undeveloped reference can expose a serial number and the full frame.

Apple's Reference Image feature gives iPhone 18 Pro owners a way to compare an edited photograph with its own camera capture. Sharing that record also requires privacy choices.
The opt-in feature is off by default. Apple's September 14 privacy notice says raw images, metadata and device information go to Private Cloud Compute for development. Apple says it cannot access those raw images, but receives assessment metadata including sensor identifiers and a photo hash.
Its September 18 support guide warns that an undeveloped reference can reveal a device serial number and the full captured frame, even when the shared photo appears zoomed in. Users can exclude the reference in sharing options; transferring all photo data needs particular care.
The system helps expose cropping, colour changes and generative edits by comparison with a minimally processed reference. It authenticates camera capture, not the truth of a scene. Apple's account of its privacy design is not an independent audit.
