Swift’s three-song UK chart lead is a first look, not a final sweep
The UK Official Charts Company places Taylor Swift’s “Patient Zero,” “Cleveland” and “Pink Clouding” at Nos. 1, 2 and 3 in its September 27 First Look. That snapshot uses early sales and streaming reports; Friday’s final singles chart can change. The provisional ranking offers a more precise measure of the new release’s UK opening than an unqualified claim of three confirmed chart hits.

Taylor Swift’s “Patient Zero” is leading a three-song run at the top of the UK Official Chart: First Look, published on September 27. “Cleveland” appears at No. 2 and “Pink Clouding” at No. 3. The striking configuration follows the September 25 release of The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, but the word “first” in the chart’s name matters: these are provisional positions, not the finished weekly singles chart.
The Official Charts Company says its First Look uses preliminary sales and early streaming reports to preview the Top 40 ahead of Friday’s Official Singles Chart Top 100. The company therefore describes Swift as someone who “could” claim the full Top 3, and says “Patient Zero” would become her eighth UK No. 1 if it holds its lead. Reporting those conditional statements as a completed three-place sweep would turn a forecast into an outcome the chart provider has not yet certified.
The early list does, however, reveal more than the rank of one promoted single. It puts three tracks from the same expanded album ahead of other new and established releases at the same snapshot. This is a UK chart indicator, based on the Official Charts Company’s own early reporting, rather than a global streaming total. It does not itself verify claims about Spotify’s most-streamed song in a day, and the chart story does not provide a numerical Spotify count from which to calculate such a record.
The release context is also more specific than “a new album.” The Official Charts Company described The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore as an expanded version of Swift’s earlier album, with four new songs, and identified “Patient Zero” as its lead single. Its September 25 new-release report confirms the expanded set was available that Friday. A September 27 early-chart list thus captures the first part of the release’s UK commercial trajectory, not a complete week of listening and purchasing.
The other cultural event attached to “Patient Zero” is moving on a different timetable. CBS and MTV’s September 24 announcement scheduled the song’s music video to make its world premiere during the September 27 Video Music Awards. The announcement names Swift as director, Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson as performers in the video, and Emmanuel Lubezki as cinematographer. Those are production credits and a planned premiere, not evidence that the video caused any particular chart movement before the broadcast.
For readers tracking the song from the UK, the distinction is practical. The audio and the expanded album were released on September 25; a video premiere was announced for the awards programme two days later; the September 27 UK ranking is an early market snapshot. Each date describes a different event. A later change in the final weekly chart would not retroactively erase the First Look, but it would change any claim about the song’s certified weekly position.
The Official Charts article also says a sustained “Patient Zero” lead would give Swift an eighth UK chart-topping single. That is another prospective milestone, conditional on the Friday result. It should not be combined with the separate Spotify record claim circulating in entertainment coverage. One statement concerns a national weekly singles chart, and the other a platform’s daily streams; their measures and time windows are different.
