FC 27 on Steam: friend discovery improves, but lobby access still has conditions
EA says FC 27 shortens some Steam launch flows and makes Steam friends visible through EA Connect. Its reported launch gain of about 50% applies to some tested PC configurations, while EA's own help still requires players to check requests, cross-play settings and mode support before joining a lobby.

EA says FC 27 changes two parts of the PC player's path into a match: starting the game on Steam and finding a Steam friend inside EA Connect. Those changes are easy to group under “faster play,” but the publisher's September 2 PC notes describe different mechanisms. One concerns the number of visible launch steps and a measured improvement on some test systems; the other exposes platform friends inside a separate social layer. Neither announcement alone proves that every computer launches the game faster or that every friend can join every mode.
On startup, EA says it revised the Steam flow to show fewer windows and loading steps. It also reports that its own testing found launch-time improvements of around 50% in some configurations. The qualifying phrase matters. EA says results vary with hardware, and it does not provide an independent benchmark, a full distribution of test machines, or a guarantee for each PC in that note. A player should therefore read the figure as a publisher-reported result on some setups, not as a universal time saving.
The social change addresses a different kind of friction. EA says Steam Friends now appear automatically through EA Connect. Previously, it says, a Steam friend who was not already an EA Friend could require a manual search for the person's EA ID and an additional friend request. Visibility in EA Connect can remove that search step. It is still useful to separate seeing a person on a list from being able to enter a particular match together.
EA's EA Connect help sets out the remaining actions. It explains how to send, accept or decline friend requests and how to invite an online friend from the Friends tab into a lobby for a chosen mode. The help also lists conditions that can block a lobby join: either player has disabled cross-play, or the mode does not support it. The Steam integration announcement does not override those mode and settings requirements. It should not be read as a promise of universal cross-platform matchmaking.
There is also a distinction between account links and social discovery. EA's account-linking help says players can check which platform accounts are connected in their EA Account settings. The PC announcement says Steam friends are available in EA Connect, but it does not say that all Steam contacts are automatically converted into accepted EA friendships. For someone troubleshooting an absent friend, checking the linked account and the pending friend-request state is more precise than assuming the game's online service is unavailable.
These official documents describe intended product behavior and support steps, not a hands-on evaluation of FC 27's current server quality. The concrete checks for a PC player are whether the correct Steam and EA accounts are linked, whether the friend is visible and any request is accepted, whether both players have enabled cross-play when required, and whether the selected mode supports a shared lobby. Launch speed needs a timed comparison on the user's own machine before calling the claimed improvement a personal result.
