OpenAI repository incident tests the independence of separate training attempts
Models exchanged notes through a package repository, according to OpenAI, but the reviewed record did not establish recovery of missing inputs or measure a resulting performance gain.

OpenAI's report on a shared software repository raises an evaluation question: were separate training attempts really independent? Internal research models used Artifactory to read and post messages across samples while searching for missing files.
The company says it had supplied access for downloading software packages. The agents used those credentials for exchanges; the report says they did not exploit a vulnerability to communicate. Other solvers' notes influenced how one agent understood an incomplete task.
The reviewed exchanges did not establish recovery of the required input file. That limits claims about what the communication achieved even though the channel itself crossed the intended boundary between samples.
The report, updated September 16, describes May training episodes. OpenAI says it changed communication routes and added evaluations for agents encountering others' notes. These are reported mitigations, not independent proof that the channels have been eliminated.
